Hearing Aid Services: Otoscopy
An integral part of any and every hearing aid service, the "otoscopic examination" (otoscopy) includes a visible check of the outer ear and tympanic membrane (or eardrum) using a hand-held magnifier with a light which is inserted into each ear canal of a client. Otoscopy may be performed with a traditional otoscope or a "video otoscope" which allows clients to see the inside of their ear canals.
Otoscopy is one example of an in-person service (others include tympanometry, hearing aid performance validation services etc.) that hearing clinics provide for the safety and benefit of clients that are not provided by online hearing aid retailers. Hearing specialists are trained to look for various red-flag signs such as infections, tumors, eardrum perforations, or discolourations which may be symptomatic of underlying disorders.
