Hearing Aid Services: Tinnitus Assessment
Tinnitus usually manifests itself as a perceived "ringing" in the ears (tonal tinnitus) or a "static sound" (non-tonal tinnitus). While tinnitus is usually a sign of some form of hearing loss, it is a multi-faceted problem that can also be caused by medications which cause temporary or permanent hearing loss (ototoxic medications), ear wax or debris in the ear canal, issues with the circulatory system or nervous system, or even a lack of sleep or well-being.
There is no properly researched cure for tinnitus that is caused by cochlear hearing loss, as there is no cure for cochlear hearing loss, itself, although research continues to progress on both fronts. Masking tinnitus, or introducing a sound slightly above the level of tinnitus thereby distracting the sufferer from the bothersome sounds, remains the most effective way of managing tinnitus.
Hearing aids, whether by the very fact that they amplify ambient sound, or through tinnitus maskers built into the hearing aid, can work well in this regard, assuming the tinnitus is measured at a frequency that is within the effective range of amplification of the hearing aid (generally up to 8KHz). Tinnitus that exceeds 8KHz can best be masked with extended frequency white noise generators (digital or acoustic).
However, multiple recent studies support the notion that "notched tinnitus therapy" (sounds where the frequency of measured tonal tinnitus has been removed), given a high degree of exposure, may be able to "train the brain" to disregard tinnitus over a great deal of time. This form of tinnitus therapy is focused on tonal tinnitus only. Of the forms of notched tinnitus therapy, studies show that "notched white noise", as opposed to notched music or other sounds, have a greater effect.
During tinnitus therapy, the frequency of tinnitus may change. We recommend tinnitus clients visit the clinic on a yearly basis to have their tinnitus reassessed and adjusted for the greatest benefit. Other, more costly, tinnitus management and rehabilitation programs exist in the marketplace. Our tinnitus therapy is based on the latest research and, at a fraction of the cost of competitors, provides the best value and cost/benefit.
UBHearing™ is your source for affordable tinnitus management for those with hearing loss. Whether you have tonal or non-tonal tinnitus, we have advice and solutions that can allow clients to get their life back through tinnitus management and rehabilitative techniques based on the latest research.
